NY Worst Kickboxing

I signed up for a kickboxing membership in January 2024 with my roommate. When we signed up in person at the end of our trial class, we were told that this was a month-by-month membership. We both remember being told this, and I know I wouldn't have signed up for a yearly membership because I knew I would be leaving NYC in August for grad school. I reached out to the business on March 8, 2024 to say that I would like to cancel, and they put me in touch with the membership company, which said I could only cancel if I moved 25 miles away or had a 6-month or longer documented injury, and that otherwise I would have to keep paying monthly for a full year. After a months-long dispute with them, during which I received almost weekly calls from the membership company and NY San Da ignored all of my calls and emails, I was told they would cancel the membership but that I still owed them money for April. I refused, because I'd already paid for March even though I didn't take any classes since February, and their inability to process the claim within 23 days should not lead to me owing them more money. When I refused, they transferred the issue to a debt collection agency, which now says I owe $1,450, which doesn't make sense because even adding up all the months I haven't paid, it would not be that much money. I have also tried contacting the kickboxing company many times, via email, phone, voicemail, and even in person, but each time they have ignored me or been unavailable. Not only has this been an incredibly frustrating experience, but my credit score is now much lower than it should be because it says I have an unpaid debt.

I feel like I've done everything I can to try to work this out politely and directly, but this company refuses to treat me with any respect. I'm also a student, and a cost like this is a serious blow to my finances. I'm currently filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the NY Attorney General's Office to try to get some recourse in this situation. I highly recommend you find a kickboxing class where they don't employ bait-and-switch tactics to steal your money and then ignore you as soon as you try to talk to them about it. And if you need more proof, you can see on Google Reviews how many other people have similar complaints to me, as well as the rude, childish way NY San Da responds to all of those commenters.

RESPONSE TO OWNER: Hi David, thanks so much for responding to me so promptly. I wish I had known when trying to get in touch with you for the past six months that your primary form of communication was through Google reviews. A few things:

1. You’ve ALWAYS found that to be the case in court? How many people have sued you lol
2. I don’t appreciate you flat-out lying about the details here — what fake documents? What previous membership? You have one location and I signed up for the class right when I moved to NYC. At least put some effort into your lies.
3. I also don’t appreciate you insulting my family, but I've seen what you've replied to other commenters, and I've seen how tall you are — I know very little is beneath you.
4. I also know that you're DELETING REVIEWS of my friends and family who have posted on my behalf. This is extremely sketchy and gives me zero faith that you haven’t been doing that for bad reviews all along. Talk about FRAUD.

I have tried, for half a year, to deal with this directly, responsibly, and politely. You have reciprocated by ignoring me and then being degrading, deceitful, and infantile. Sort your reviews by recency and look at all the 1 star reviews and the pathetic responses you’ve dealt to each one of them — at some point, maybe it’s not that EVERYONE who takes your class and leaves a less than stellar review is a liar, rival kickboxing class, fake account, “out of shape,” or “demonstrating signs of paranoia.” Maybe if you didn’t employ bait and switch tactics to steal your clients’ money or treat them with complete disrespect (and if your studio didn’t smell like rancid feet), your business would be doing better.

I have been a member here for years and I continue to love the gym, the workout and the people. Never thought I would do any exercise consistently this long, but not only did I see results, the classes remained quite fun! The place is just awesome, everyone friendly, a good sense of humor, quite a sweat.

Advice to anyone reading this, buy the groupon, it's a better deal than the web special. And they will give you a better start up offer if you start with a groupon. They are open 7 days a week but they do book up pretty quickly, a few friends had to wait a week for their first sessions.

Signed up to train here for about two months while in the city for an internship and had a great experience. There are students of all skill levels and lots of beginners come through from the groupon deal. Everyone I met at the gym was polite and eager to help me learn. There are options for more fitness oriented classes as well as ones geared more toward fighting. If you're reading reviews trying to decide just go grab the groupon and give it a shot

This was an incredibly disappointing class. I found the instructor rude and not motivating at all. If you’re looking for legitimate Muay Thai training, this is not the place. I would categorize it more as boxercise, which will give you a good workout but sloppy technique. The class is also pricey for what you receive in terms of training. I tried to cancel my membership but (surprise) to no avail have yet to receive any refund or get ahold of anyone. When asked for the owners contact they were hesitant to provide it. Rude is not even the word to describe the way in which the owner replied. Owner handled everything in an unprofessional manner. Will not be going back.

I randomly signed up for a GroupOn with this gym back in 2018 (?) and have been a member ever since. Love the workouts. Love the lessons in self-defense. Love the other members that go here. And love the instructors. I also wanna give them a special shoutout for making classes and info available during the pandemic - I've always felt as safe and protected as possible during the workouts, inside or outside.

Signed up for a Groupon deal and worked out here for 10 kickboxing sessions. Overall great gym and very professional! Gym is clean and instructors are very friendly. Fitness sessions are beginner-friendly, high paced and a great workout; the intermediate classes are a little slower paced with more focus on technique. There are also kung fu and other martial arts available.

The instructors are very friendly, welcoming, and, most importantly, knowledgeable. Every class breaks down not only how to do a technique, but WHY it's done and WHY it's done in a certain way. On top of that, you get a great value when doing your trial classes (six classes for $60 last time I checked).

I started here with a Groupon; its been two years and I've never looked back. This is the best workout and the best gym. No two classes are the same. My favorite aspect of this facility is the people. The instructors are supremely talented and are the utmost professionals. Each one brings his/her own personality to every class which makes it so fun. They focus on proper technique, they are very patient with the newbies, and they always motivate me! My fellow members are great; it's always encouraging to see the regulars. I've made some friends here - a lot more than I can say from my years of belonging to a more traditional gym
